Who may apply? A person who can prove that their father was born in the UK may be eligible to apply for a British passport. People in these circumstances should contact their nearest British consulate or the Home Office. Other people who hold residency / indefinite leave to remain and intend to live in the UK, (or abroad in crown service), may claim citizenship under either of the following headings: Once approved you will be eligible for a British passport. Marriage to a British Citizen If you have been in the country for one year on a marriage visa and then two years with residency you may start the naturalisation process. Over that three year period you cannot have been outside of the country for more than 270 days, and over the past year prior to applying you cannot have been outside the country for more than 90 days. 5 Years Residence If you have been in the country for four years on an ancestry visa or work permit and then held residency for a further year, you may start the naturalisation process. Over that three year period you cannot have been outside of the country for more than 450 days and over the past year prior to applying you cannot have been outside the country for more than 90 days. · During your stay leading up to your application, you cannot have been in breach of the immigration laws. · In both cases you will need to aged 18 or over, not of unsound mind, be of good character and possess sufficient knowledge of the English language to fulfil your duties as a citizen.
